Falmouth Affordable Housing Project Receives State Funding

FALMOUTH – A new affordable housing project in Falmouth is being partially funded by the state through a grant of $1,300,000.

The money is part of a larger funding allotment of $3,000,000 from the state Community Scale Housing Initiative which was launched in 2017.

The program is a joint endeavor between the Department of Housing and Community Development and MassHousing and is available to municipalities with populations of less than 200,000 for projects that will create between 5 and 20 new housing units. Last year the state awarded a total of $2.2 million dollars that supported 36 new housing units.

“A healthy and diverse housing stock, for all Massachusetts families, is critical to the long-term success of our Commonwealth,”said Governor Charlie Baker.

“Our administration continues to invest in affordable housing, offer resources for cities and towns pursuing housing production through the Housing Choice Initiative, and we are working through our Open for Business Initiative to ensure state-owned property is being utilized effectively.”

“The Community Scale Housing Initiative is the direct result of feedback we heard from communities across the Commonwealth,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “These awards further our efforts to increase housing production of all kinds, and fills the gap for projects unable to access traditional affordable housing resources. Congratulations, we look forward to seeing these projects move forward!”

“We are pleased to continue offering new and enhanced resources for municipalities and stakeholders in their efforts to increase housing options, create thriving downtowns and strengthen their community,” said Housing and Community Development Undersecretary Janelle Chan.

“Affordable housing is a vital part of livable, thriving neighborhoods that embrace our most vulnerable populations and provide the foundation for all our families to succeed.”

In Falmouth the money will go toward building the Gifford Street Workforce, a 10 unit workforce housing project, a partner in the project is the Falmouth Housing Corporation.

All ten units will be restricted to households earning less than 80% of the area median income with two units further restricted to households earning less than 50% of AMI.

This project is phase one of a two phase development which will in total include 20 one-bedroom workforce housing units. The Town of Falmouth will provide additional financial support. The other towns receiving money in this round of funding were Newburyport and Northampton.
