Free CPR Training at Cape Cod Mall on Saturday

HYANNIS – A trip to the Cape Cod Mall on Saturday will bring double benefits as the Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) will offer free “Hands-only” CPR training from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the main corridor just outside of Macy’s.

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths and is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an out-of-hospital setting.

It can be taught in less than 10 minutes and can save lives.

MRC Director Diana Gaumond reports that “90% of people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest will die.”

Effective CPR provided by a bystander in the first few minutes after cardiac arrest will increase the chance of survival by two to three times but fewer than 20% of Americans know how to perform effective CPR.

“This is why we’re so passionate about giving people the training to be able to save the life of their own—or someone else’s—loved one,” she said

MRC’s goal is to teach Hands-only CPR to as many people as possible and they hope visitors to the Cape Cod Mall on Saturday will seek them out in the main corridor just outside of Macy’s.

The team of volunteers has taught at the Barnstable County Fair and is reaching out to other groups and community events to provide teaching opportunities.

“We hope to reach a lot of people at the Cape Cod Mall on January 19,” said Gaumond.

“Please come by to learn this life-saving technique and look into the possibility of becoming an MRC volunteer.”
