AQUINNAH – Officials in Aquinnah sent a letter to the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay head requesting a public meeting with tribal leaders to discuss the tribe’s ongoing construction of a slots parlor in the remote island town.
The tribe has rebuffed the overtures of Selectmen, saying it is under no obligation to discuss its plans with the town. Selectmen in both Aquinnah and Chilmark have asked the Martha’s Vineyard Commission to consider the project as a development of regional impact, the tribe says the Commission has no jurisdiction in the matter.
Town officials say they are concerned about the potential impacts of the facility, which is slated to be built on tribal property off State Road. The town has asked for a response from the tribe by Wednesday, March 13th.
The gaming facility is set to have 250 slot machines, a beer and wine license and will be serviced by food trucks. Land clearing for the project is now underway.
