Maria Mitchell Association to Host Conservation Talk

NANTUCKET – The Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association will host a lecture next week by Vince Murphy, the Protected Species Technician for the Town of Nantucket, titled “Nantucket’s Protected Shore Birds.”

Murphy is an ecologist who has worked with a large variety of species and habitats in Europe and North America and currently manages the protected species on Nantucket in accordance with the Massachusetts Natural Heritage program and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

He will discuss the protected bird species that breed around Nantucket each summer and the Town’s efforts to conserve these species.

The talk will feature information about the legal standing, conservation strategies, and future management of birds.

The lecture is part of the Maria Mitchell Associations Science Speaker Series, which features astronomers, authors, environmentalists, biologists, professors, and doctors.

The MMA Speaker Series is sponsored by Bank of America, Hyline Cruises, Zaazey Olive Oil, Cisco Brewers, and Nantucket Island Resorts.

The lecture is set to take place on Wednesday, August 14th from 7 to 8 p.m. at 33 Washington Street in Nantucket.

Talks are free for MMA members and $10 for non-members.
