Gov. Baker Declares September as Emergency Preparedness Month

HYANNIS – Governor Charlie Baker has proclaimed September as Emergency Preparedness Month in Massachusetts.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), Department of Public Health, and American Red Cross of Massachusetts will be promoting tips and initiatives to protect homeowners, communities, and businesses from extreme weather emergencies.

Public Information Officer for MEMA Chris Besse shared one of those tips.

“The first is to make sure people have an emergency kit of supplies, that they’ve got the things they would need to be self-sufficient in their home for at least three days to a week: bottled water, food, medicine, flashlights, batteries, radios,” Besse said.

This proclamation from Baker came as the southeastern part of the country was preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Dorian.

Besse also detailed the importance of knowing what to do when emergencies such as, but not limited to, hurricanes occur.

“When we talk about all the other hazards, the tornadoes that we see annually and most recently in Cape Cod, the winter storms we see, nor’easters that cause coastal flooding and power outages. There’s really a whole host of disasters that can impact us here. So, we really want people to be as prepared as possible,” Besse continued.
