Updated: One person killed as flames sweep through house in Provincetown

PROVINCETOWN
– Firefighters were called to battle a structure fire in Provincetown. The call came in about 2:33 PM Thursday afternoon at 86 Atkins Mayo Road.

The location is in the east end of town along the old railroad right of way making for difficult access.

Firefighters had to run about 1000 feet of hose and use multiple engines to get enough water to the scene.

Fire crews had to keep their distance from the house for a time after some fireworks or ammo started going off.

A section of Bradford Street east of Howland Street was closed due to equipment in the roadway.

Firefighters remained on the scene well into the evening checking for hot spots and investigating. Local restaurants sent food to the scene for the firefighters.

Late Thursday evening a Medical Examiner’s vehicle was seen leaving the scene. The State Fire Marshal’s tells Cape Wide News that at about 4:30 PM Thursday afternoon their office was asked to respond to a house fire at 86 Atkins Mayo Road in Provincetown. The office confirmed a single adult died in the fire. Investigation into the origin and cause is ongoing by Provincetown Fire and Police and State Police assigned to both the office of the State Fire Marshal and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office. While the investigation is ongoing, the focus is on an accidental cause.
