Yarmouth Police warn about phone scam targeting local residents

YARMOUTH – In the last 24 hours, the Yarmouth Police Department has received reports from two residents who fell victim to the Eversource utility scam, one in the amount of $2,400 and another for $600.

Here’s what you need to know:

Eversource or any other utility (Comcast, National Grid, etc…) will never call and demand payment via a “Moneypak” (aka Green Dot card), a gift card or any visa/mastercard that you can purchase at a local convience store or grocery store.

The scam artists can be very convincing and sound very official. They will call and tell you that your acccount is deliquent and request a payment immediately.

Sometimes they will refer you to another phone number for payment. They will even remain on the phone with you while you drive to the store and make purchases.

Scam artists will use threats of imminent service interuption if not paid immediately. Hang up on the scam artist. Even if you think it is a real request for money, hang up, look up the utility company’s phone number and call them back.
