How The Vineyard Helped Win The War

Martha’s Vineyard has a direct tie-in with the greatest period of unrest in our nation’s history: the Civil War. The steamship Monohansett, designed by Vineyard Haven Captain Benjamin Cromwell, was put into service in 1862 as a ferry from New Bedford to the island. But it was quickly scooped up and chartered to the government during the war. By the end of the conflict, it served as General Ulysses S. Grant’s dispatch boat.
