During the 1800s, one Nantucket resident made an important advancement in the field of astronomy. Maria Mitchell is widely regarded as the first professional female astronomer in the United States, a title she earned after discovering a new comet in 1847 that was named “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” She reportedly made the discovery while sitting atop her father’s business, the Pacific National Bank on Main Street.
