BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team (CCDART) is looking for volunteers to assist in the pet sheltering component of the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Shelter System.
CCDART’s focus is to serve homebound seniors and other vulnerable populations who have pets, and qualified volunteers will have both animal and people skills.
“We’re looking for people over the age of 18 who are willing to sleep on a cot in an emergency shelter and who love people and animals,” said team member Holly Rogers. “You can’t just love animals, you have to also love the people they come with.”
CCDART operates in five regional shelters in the towns of Falmouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth, and Harwich. The Lower Cape Animal Shelter Team manages the pet shelter operations at the Eastham shelter.
Volunteers fulfill a variety of duties, including registration, and also with general animal needs.
“Basically we’re just a supervisory group unless we have people who can’t for whatever reason care for their own animals,” Rogers said. “The we step up and say ‘ok, we’ll walk your dog, we’ll feed your dog, we’ll keep your dog safe.’”
CCDART will be hosting two upcoming training sessions – Saturday, November 18 in West Barnstable, and December 2 in Falmouth. Training sessions will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
