DENNIS – A new exhibit is coming to the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis featuring sculptors and painters who paint in the medium of pigmented wax.

Depth Perception: Painting in Wax includes the work of 19 artists who are taking part in the International Encaustic Conference in Provincetown.

Encaustic paint is pigment suspended in beeswax and has very different qualities from other paints.

The founder of the conference and guest curator for the show, Joanne Mattera, says artists love working with encaustic because it has a luminosity like no other paint and gives off an inner glow.

Artists manipulate the wax when it is molten on a warm palette. It dries quickly and can be built up into many layers, which can be scraped and cut into and formed into sculptures.

An opening reception for the exhibit is May 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Cherie Mittenthal is the director of the conference and the co-curator.

After the conference concludes the artists will also participate in a closing reception at the museum on June 4 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

Admission is $9, $7 for seniors and students 19 and older, $5 for teens and free for children 12 and under.
