HYANNIS – Figawi Charities, Inc. is doing what they do best. Representatives from eight organizations were on hand for an evening of camaraderie, hors d’oeuvres and, of course, charitable donations.
The event took place at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum in Hyannis. Organizations on hand to receive donations included Cape and islands EMS, Latham Centers, Cape Cod Challenger club and Wild care of Cape Cod.
Additional recipients include Cape Cod Healthcare, Nantucket Land Bank, and The Barnstable, Mashpee and Falmouth after prom committees.
The Figawi race dates back to 1972 when four sailors decided to see who could make it from Hyannis to Nantucket the fastest.
It quickly became an annual event for sailors, along with family and friends, to make what was now a round trip race over a three day weekend.
An annual charity ball was started in 1987 as a way for organizers to give back to their communities. The event, which includes raffles and a silent auction, attracts about 1200 people and raises approximately $200,000 annually.
