Giant Umbrella Installed on Bass River Beach in South Yarmouth

beachSOUTH YARMOUTH – Beachgoers this summer on Bass River Beach in South Yarmouth will see a giant blue umbrella that measures 20 feet in diameter to provide shade from the sun and heat.

The fixture will be on Bass River Beach in South Yarmouth and is funded by the Glenna Kohl Fund for Hope.

Yarmouth Parks and Recreation Director Patricia Armstrong says that she hopes similar umbrellas can find its way on to more Cape beaches.

“We really have been pushing sun safety with our lifeguards and those that come and visit us on the beach, so this is a perfect fit into that program,” said Armstrong.

A dedication ceremony for the umbrella will be held on May 16 at 10 a.m.

The umbrella will be dedicated to longtime Yarmouth Selectman Jerry Sullivan who died from melanoma in 2012.

Armstrong says that some people do have concerns about the structure.

“Others are saying . . . people are going to put their chairs and towels down for the day like they do at a pool at a resort. We’re hoping that’s not the case,” said Armstrong.

“This is going to be a community-shared, take-a-break-from-the-sun type of location,” she said.
