Governor Starts Campaign Aimed at Removing Stigma of Opioid Addiction

BOSTON – The Baker Administration is starting a public education campaign to combat opioid addiction.

The campaign is aimed at fighting opioid addiction by removing the stigma of talking about the problem.

“Our administration is stepping forward to share their message,” Baker said. “A message we hope will become contagious and encourage others to step out of the shadows.”

The campaign will use radio, billboards and digital ads that will feature stories from individuals in treatment for substance abuse.

“We are urging every resident of the Commonwealth to support those struggling with opioid addiction as we strive to become a state without stigma,” Baker said.

The campaign looks to drive home the point that addiction is not a moral failure, but an illness.

“When you are labeled as an addict, a lowlife, a junkie, It sticks – hard,” Baker said. “Studies have shown that it prevents people from getting into treatment, holds them back from recovery, stability and success.”

The $850,000 campaign is funded through a federal grant to the Department of Public Health.
