HARWICH – Harwich and Chatham could soon be faced with tough decisions over the Monomoy Regional School Department budget.

School officials have proposed a $36 million budget, which is an increase of over 3 percent increase from last year’s budget.

The proposal is nearly $830,000 above the limits set by Proposition two and a half.

“If one town, or the other, or both, cannot close that gap then we would have to work with the select boards to seek an override,” said Monomoy Superintendent Scott Carpenter.

Harwich officials asked in December for the district to trim their proposal, but Carpenter said they cannot do that. “From the school’s perspective, we’re not going to be able to close that gap without significantly and adversely impacting the educational program.”

It’s believed Chatham can cover the proposed cost without an override, but Harwich may not be able to, Carpenter said. Harwich is responsible for 73 percent of the budget, according to Carpenter.
