Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich Opens for the season Saturday with changes to classic exhibits and a new special exhibit of contemporary landscapes.

“Painted Landscapes: Contemporary Views” will display the works of 43 artists from across the country, including Alex Katz, one of the most recognized American artists of the 21st Century.

“It’s meant to really challenge the viewers expectations of what a landscape painting really is and what it looks like,” said Lauren Della Monica, the exhibits guest curator. “In the old days paintings of this kind were rolling hills and cows and fluffy clouds, and sort of bucolic, pretty pictures. And today that is sometimes the case but more often than not the paintings of the landscapes are of our contemporary world.”

The paints could be urban landscapes or abstract paintings.

“Really a broad spectrum under the heading of landscape,” Della Monica said.

Della Monica is a fine art consultant from New York City who grew up on Cape Cod.

“Getting to do a work project on Cape Cod is like coming home,” she said. “It’s an interesting combination of things.”

She is hoping that visitors feel like they have traveled the country after experiencing the exhibit.

“On Cape Cod we have a very particular vernacular – things are very coastal and often Cape specific,” Della Monica said.

The 2017 season will also allow visitors to get “up close and personal” with the exhibits, including panel discussions and workshops with artists in the exhibit and local artists, along with a classic automobile ride.

“Points of View” is an outdoor installation which will feature art set within the gardens and grounds.

Heritage will also provide, for an additional fee, concierge-style tours. The 90-minute tours provide behind-the-scenes views of the exhibits. They will be offered twice a day from June 17 through September 17.

The season runs from Saturday through Columbus Day.
