HCT Meets Cornelius Pond Fundraising Goal

HARWICH – After four years of fundraising, The Harwich Conservation Trust has met its goal of raising $850,000 to secure wetlands property at Cornelius Pond.

A Conservation Partnership grant recently announced by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts completes the $850,000 fundraising campaign for the Cornelius Pond Woodlands Project.

The grant, combined with private and business donations, and $200,000 in Town Community Preservation Act funds will allow the Harwich Conservation Trust to purchase and preserve 15 acres of wetland property.

HTC Executive Director Michael Lynch said that the trust was lucky that the sellers of the property were interested in conservation.

“Originally the family listed the property at $1,150,000” he said, “In their heart of hearts they wanted to see the scenic beauty and variety of wildlife habitat forever preserve and the family agreed to sell it to the trust for $800,000.”

Officials with the trust are now working to open a walking trail on the property by the fall of this year or spring of 2020.
