BARNSTABLE – The Cape & Islands United Way has issued emergency SNAP relief funding to several community partners to feed those in need.
This relief effort is in addition to the more than $100,000 already committed this year to addressing food insecurity.
US lawmakers are working on a tentative agreement to end federal freezes on programs including SNAP, but it has a long road ahead.
“This SNAP crisis has exposed even greater challenges in making sure everyone has enough food to thrive,” said Mark Skala, President/CEO of the Cape and Islands United Way.
“I recently heard a story about an elderly man at a food pantry who was on his knees praying for more eggs than was being distributed. He cares for four grandchildren and a dozen eggs just wouldn’t be enough. That’s what people in need are going through. I am so grateful to our donors and supporters partnering with us to feed our neighbors in need.”
To date, two rounds of emergency funding have been distributed, with additional funds to be provided as resources become available.
Organizations that have received emergency funding include Faith Family Kitchen, Hands of Hope Pantry and Outreach Center, Lower Cape Outreach Council, Falmouth Service Center, Sandwich Food Pantry, Island Grown Initiative, and the Falmouth Jewish Congregation.
