Improvements Made to Merchants Way Crossing in Sandwich

SANDWICH -The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has made improvements to the intersection of Merchants Way and Route 6A at the request of Sandwich selectmen.

The state has replaced signage, repainted the crosswalk, adjusted signals timing for pedestrians, reduced vegetation and trimmed trees.

They refused the town’s request to install “Crosswalk Ahead” signs and ones that indicate a signalized intersection.

“I think, based on what we’ve heard, other than the trees that they’re going to be talking about, they’ve gone as far as they’re able or willing to go,” said Town Manager Bud Dunham.

The intersection was the site of a fatal accident last May where two elderly women on foot were killed by driver.

Selectmen have asked Dunham to push Mass DOT to get the signs, but Dunham acknowledged that they follow federal signage standards for pedestrian crossings that are signalized.

“They’re following federal standards,” said Dunham.

“They said a signal is way more controlling and an engineer, traffic safety and police thing, then a blinking light, they said we’re getting better than that.”
