BARNSTABLE – In an effort to make the public aware of the risk of extinction for eight marine species, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration Fisheries division has launched a new initiative called, Species in the Spotlight: Survive to Thrive.

The campaign will include targeted efforts to stabilize the populations of the eight species and attempt to prevent their extinction. The goal is that the species will become candidates for recovery.

The campaign lasts through next May and will include a five-year action plan for each species.

The action plans will be released in September.

The eight species that are at risk of extinction are the Atlantic Salmon Gulf of Maine Distinct Population Segment, Central California Coast Coho Evolutionarily Significant Unit, Cook Inlet Beluga Whale, Hawaiian Monk Seal, Pacific Leatherback Sea Turtle, Sacramento River Winter-run Chinook, Southern Resident Killer Whale and White Abalone.
