PROVINCETOWN – A public forum was held Wednesday night by the Provincetown Building Committee to discuss plans for a new police station in the town.
The forum was meant to get all governing bodies on board with the project on the same page, as well as open up the meeting for comment.
“This has been a long project and like any government or local civic project it takes time because a lot of people get involved and you want to do the right thing,” said Building Committee member Donald Murphy.
The Select Board approved a proposal to continue with the project’s current design in November, but were met with backlash from the public it was revealed that the modern design of the new station came to a pricey $12.5 million in estimated costs.
“This has been going on since 2012 and I think we’ve reached a point after looking at various locations and various inputs, I think we have a plan we can very safely refer to as complete,” Murphy said.
“When I say complete, it’s ready to go. We’ve worked as a Building Committee, giving the Chief of Police the opportunity to identify his requirements. It has gone from a basic goal to establishing a program that is clearly defined, what the requirements are, how they’re being met and presented.”
That price tag is roughly $4 million over the amount allocated by the town for the project in 2017.
Murphy adds that the cost per square foot of recently built police stations across the Cape is similar to that of the proposal in Provincetown.
