The Sandwich Chamber of Commerce needs to raise $60,000 by July 31 for a new Welcome Center.

SANDWICH – Site work for a new visitor center in Sandwich is underway.

Stakes have been placed where the new 2,000 square-foot facility will be built, a welcome site for those who have supported the project from the beginning.

“If people need tangible proof that this is happening, you can see the stakes in the ground as we speak and we’ll be cutting down trees in the next couple of weeks,” Sandwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jay Pateakos said.

Pateakos has touted the visitor center as a welcoming beacon for Sandwich visitors and unlike the existing structure, it would provide proper restrooms, Chamber offices and would also be open year-round.

While the hope was to have the facility open before the summer tourist season, with construction just getting underway, that hope has faded. “It’s probably by the end of the summer now unfortunately,” Pateakos said.

The existing information center will remain open during construction.
