FALMOUTH – Steamship Authority General Manager Bob Davis made staffing recommendations this week to the board following a review of operations by a private consulting firm.
The new positions were recommended by HMS Consulting which conducted a review of operations last year following a tumultuous spring and summer as mechanical issues caused cancelations and service disruptions.
Davis backed the view of HMS Consulting on hiring a director of marine operations, along with a health, safety, quality and environmental protection director and a planner.
“By and large, our recommendations are along the lines of what HMS is looking at,” Davis said.
Davis also said they discussed filling a vacant port captain position that is already budgeted.
“We will have a port captain in place before the summer,” Davis said. “We should have a director of marine operations before the summer.”
The board will vote on the six-figure marine operations position at its meeting next month.
Davis also expects the HSQE position to be approved and filled before the summer.
Davis suggested hiring a planner instead of retaining an outside consultant recommended by HMS.
“I think the position could be valuable enough to be working on our strategic plan and that document is going to be a living, breathing document,” Davis said.
