Student Renovation of Pleasant Bay Boating Building Almost Complete

HARWICH – A project to restore a 1930’s-era building on the campus of Pleasant Bay Community Boating is nearing completion.

The effort to retrofit Knollenberg Cottage is a collaboration between the non-profit boating organization and Cape Cod Technical High School in Harwich.

Pleasant Bay Community Boating Executive Director, and former town administrator of Brewster, Charlie Sumner enjoys working with the students from Cape Cod Tech.

“They are fun. They do great work and it’s very economical because there is largely no labor component,” Sumner said. “So I used them frequently when I worked for the town of Brewster.”

Students worked to replace all the systems in the building, including electrical, heating, and plumbing, along with carpentry work. The school’s horticulture department also worked to make the campus handicap accessible.

The work is part of Pleasant Bay Community Boating’s ongoing five-year $4.8 million capital campaign, which purchased the site on Pleasant Bay and will be used to make infrastructure improvements.

“Looking at the site, all the needs they had for an infrastructure capital standpoint and knowing the services our students can provide to the community, it was a win-win,” said Bob Sanborn, the school’s superintendent. “So far it has been a win-win for our students and, I think, for Pleasant Bay Boating.”

Sanborn said the project provide more opportunities than trying to fit a dozen students into a smaller project.

“This offers the opportunity for a construction site where every student has a role,” Sanborn said.

Pleasant Bay Community Boating was established in 2003 and provides education and affordable access to recreational boating, marine education and environmental stewardship opportunities for the local community.

Cape Cod Tech was established in 1975 and currently enrolls about 620 students from Barnstable, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet and Yarmouth.
