Yarmouth Police Conduct Bicycle Safety Patrol

Yarmouth PoliceYARMOUTH – Yarmouth police are stressing bicycle safety and members of the Proactive Anti-Crime Community Policing Unit were on a specialized patrol Tuesday night dedicated to the cause.

Officers stopped 54 riders on Route 28 in West Yarmouth for a variety of bicycle law violations but there were no citations issued or arrests made as police say the offenders were first-time violators.

Police handed out bicycle lights and educational information to the bicyclists, all who were returning from work and are from a foreign country.

Some of the countries the bicyclists were from include Bulgaria, China, Turkey, Macedonia, Thailand, Jamaica, Ireland, Serbia and Kazakhstan.

Police said the most common infractions were riding at night without headlights or tail lights, riding in the wrong direction and riding while carrying objects.

State law allows police officers to stop bicyclists who commit violations, issue citations and arrest violators who fail to give their name.
