YARMOUTH – A fire was reported at the Mayflower Inn at 504 Route 28 in West Yarmouth at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday. A Hyannis crew assisted Yarmouth firefighters in battling the flames. The motel was vacant at the time and no injuries were reported. Traffic along Route 28 was slowed and directed by police until the scene was cleared. According to the Yarmouth Fire Department, the bulk of the fire was knocked down quickly but crews had to open walls and ceilings to chase it all down. The fire had burned through the rafters and if gone unnoticed it would have been a much bigger fire. The fire is still under investigation by the Yarmouth Fire Prevention Office Fire Investigation Team with assistance from the town’s Inspectional Services Department. This fire does not appear to be suspicious.
