Driver plunges into Swan Pond in Yarmouth while following GPS

A driver, following GPS directions, drove off Lake Rd. in Yarmouth and into Swan Pond, while attempting to drive to Route 28.

YARMOUTH – A driver who said he was following directions on his GPS drove right into Swan Pond in West Yarmouth early Friday morning.

Yarmouth Fire Captain Thomas Lundquist said the man was trying to get to Route 28 and followed the GPS to Lake Road, which actually ends in the pond.

The Jeep Cherokee ended up 120 feet from shore before it stopped. The driver, identified as Daniel Alley of Amesbury, and his passenger, both 21-years-old, waded back to shore and were treated on the scene for mild hypothermia.

Yarmouth Police said Alley will be charged with operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

Lundquist said he had never heard of anyone driving into the water in Yarmouth based on GPS directions.
