WELLFLEET – Smoke from a controlled burn in Yarmouth on Sunday could be seen all over Cape Cod.

As you can see in the above photo, it was even visible across Cape Cod from Wellfleet.

The burn was conducted behind the Mattacheese Middle School in Yarmouth in an effort to reduce dry vegetation.

The Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources reported that on Sunday their personnel in coordination with Northeast Fire Management and Yarmouth Fire Department, MA conducted a prescribed controlled burn of woodlands located in Yarmouth.

The controlled burn was conducted to enhance habitat growth for species that have seen loss of habitat due to invasives as well as reduce ground fuels that may enhance wild fires.

After approximately 90% of the units were burned a decision was made to extinguish the remaining burning unit. This was due to smoke behavior creating unfavorable conditions.

Overall, the controlled burn was a huge success.

The video below shows personnel extinguishing the remaining unit. Also below are pictures of the burn before, during, and after.
