BOURNE – The State Fire Marshal’s office has determined that a fatal St. Patrick’s Day fire in Bourne was ignited by smoking materials.
The fire at 10 Alona Avenue took the life of a 65-year old woman, identified by Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe as Maureen Marzelli-White.
She lived alone in the home with her pets. The dog also died in the fire but the cat survived.
State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and Bourne Fire Chief Norman W. Sylvester Jr. said the fire started on the living room couch where she was recently confined due to limited mobility. There was extensive evidence of smoking around the couch.
The fire was jointly investigated by the Bourne Fire and Police Departments and State Police assigned to both the Office of the State Fire Marshal and to the Office of the Cape and Islands District Attorney.
