STORM TEAM: Torrential downpours cause significant, gusty winds may have capsized boat off Harwich

CAPE COD – Torrential rains caused flooding across much of Cape Cod. Check here for the latest updates:

5 PM update: Some areas report nearly 5 inches of rain fell in a short time this afternoon. A Cape Wide News reader sent in these photos of scenes in Falmouth including one poor soul standing on the hood of his car waiting to be rescued (we since learned he eventually jumped into the waist deep water and waded to safety). Luckily CWN is not aware of any serious injuries anywhere on the Cape:

Meanwhile, Route 28 in West Dennis was closed due to standing water near the entrance to Bass River Marina. Side streets were jammed as heavy Friday afternoon traffic was detoured around the closure.

4:45 PM update: New details on the Harwich water rescue we’ve been reporting on: At about 2:45 PM Harwich Fire Rescue was dispatched to Wychmere Harbor Club at the end of Snow Inn Road for a report of a capsized sailboat with possibly people in the water, bringing a large response of the on duty officer, an engine, the Barnstable County Dive Truck, 2 ambulances and the Harbormaster boat, along with the Police. Some people had made their way to the Harbor Club along the jetty while other people were brought to Saquatucket Harbor by the Harbormaster. All parties were accounted for and evaluated by Medics at both locations and all declined transport to the Hospital, with 2 deciding to take a personal vehicle to a local walk in medical center. All companies cleared the scene and returned to service within about 30 minutes.

4:30 PM update: Heaviest rain has shifted east of the area but many reports of flooding are still coming in. Eversource reports less than 200 customers scattered across the Cape without power. Sandwich reported the rain caused a mudslide that covered part of Academy Road. Wellfleet officials were busy with street flooding and a washout on a hill. Truro Firefighters pulled the driver of this Volvo wagon (below) to safety after the vehicle became disabled in deep water on Highland Road near Shore Road (Route 6A).
