Well, it’s been a heck of a week since we last communicated. I hope all of you out there have power, Internet and have been able to be cozy with your cocoa and slippers. By the weekend  however, we will probably all be a bit stir crazy, and in need to get out and see someone besides our families and pets, so let’s see what’s happening! Besides the Super Bowl, of course!

Get in Shape

By a show of hands, how many of you (I’m including myself here) have kept to your New Year’s resolution to get in great shape in 2015? Yeah, I thought so. Sadly for me, baking has seemed like more fun than the elliptical. So, to that end, maybe we just all need to find something new and more fun to do. Enter Yogalates! The Barnstable Senior Center is offering this new class that combines yoga and Pilates. The class is Thursdays, 9:15 -10:15. a.m. The four classes will be only $36. So here’s your chance to pull it out of the fire and get going on your working out. The senior center is located at 825 Falmouth Rd, Hyannis. For more information go to barnstable.ma.us.

Yoga for Anxiety for Teens

Being a teen is tough. Even tougher in 2015. Luckily, there is a class starting up for teens who are struggling with anxiety and could use a healthy, natural and positive way to learn how to cope with it. This is a new class, being taught by Ingrid Jaeger, running for five weeks, starting on February 1. The cost for five weeks is $75. This could give your teen a lifetime of skills to learn how to calm themselves. The class will be held on Mondays from 3-3:45 p.m. at Navigating ADHD, 1645 Falmouth Road, Centerville. For more information you can visit ingridyoga.com, or call 508-274-7594.

Pancake Breakfast

Before you get ready for the Super Bowl on Sunday, perhaps you should do some carb loading at the 15th Annual Pancake Breakfast at the Brewster VFW, proceeds to benefit the Nauset Youth Alliance. For only $10 for adults, $6 for kids, you can get your fill of not just an assortment of pancakes but bacon, sausage, fruit and juices. There will also be a big supply of coffee and hot cocoa, donated by Dunkin’ Donuts. The breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. and goes until noon. The VFW is located at 989 Freeman’s Way, Brewster.

Book Sale

After you’re all filled up with pancakes, get yourself over to the Brewster Ladies Library for their Winter Book Sale. There will be thousands of books to choose from – you can stock up for the next snow storm! And note, there’s not just books, but DVDs, CDs, puzzles and more. The sale will continue every Sunday from 1-4 through March 29. The library is at 1822 Main Street, Brewster.

Poetry of Walt Whitman

On Sunday, February 1, Brooks Free Library has an event featuring actor, Steve Collins who will perform the poetry of Walt Whitman. Collins, a well-respected actor, will be reciting not just the best known of Whitman’s poems, but lesser known ones as well. The event is free, and is from 2-3 p.m., which gets you home in plenty of time for salsa and chips before the Super Bowl!

More Poetry

This isn’t until next weekend, but I wanted to give you a heads up on a love-themed event coming up on Saturday, February 7. The Cape Cod Poetry Group is hosting its annual Pre-Valentine’s Day event at the Brewster Ladies Library from 1-3, which will celebrate love in both written verse and song. I am a sucker for Valentine’s Day, and this is the perfect event to get you in the spirit. There will be readings by Eir Lindstrom-Holmy, Rona Laban, and Patry Francis. ‘Songs About Love’ by singer/songwriter/guitarist Rosemary Martin. There will be an open mic portion of the afternoon, so if you have some verses about love, or a song to share, come and please spread the love. The Brewster Ladies Library is at 1822 Main Street, Brewster.

Musicale

The Unitarian Church of Barnstable will be presenting, “A Mardi Gras Musicale” on Sunday, February 1 at 3 p.m.  It will feature Roger Carr, Leslie Loosli, and Robert Mesrop performing an assortment of music keeping the theme of Mardi Gras. The tickets are $18. There is a snow date of February 8. The church is located at 3330 Main St, Barnstable. Tickets may go fast, so you can buy ahead of time this week at the church, Tuesday- Friday, from 9-1. Call 508-362-6381 for more information.
