CHATHAM – Two new members have been appointed to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Board of Directors.
The new members are Dr. John Mandelman, the Vice President and Chief Scientist of the Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life at the New England Aquarium, and Amelia Deren, the CEO and founder of Amelia Rose Design.
The nonprofit works to fund research, improve public safety and educate the community about white sharks.
Mandelman said he is thrilled to join the organization’s board.
“Not only do I believe strongly in the mission, but greatly admire their leadership, and considerable support and achievements in white shark science, education and public safety domains over such a short period of time,” he said. “Given my career as a research scientist and experience helping to build a mission based research and conservation organization, I hope to contribute wherever I can during this exciting period of strategic growth for AWSC.”
Deren said it is an honor to be named to the board.
“I look forward to serving as an ambassador for this organization, which is leading the way when it comes to public safety, research and education,” she said. “The dedication to improving public safety and educating the public on this apex predator only strengthens our local communities.”
Researchers with the organization tagged the third white shark of the season Monday off Orleans.
The AWSC is in the fourth year of a five-year white shark population study off the coast of Cape Cod.
