BOURNE – One local fire department is doing its part in the fight against breast cancer.
Bourne Firefighters are spending the month of October wearing pink uniform shirts to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. October is breast cancer awareness month.
“We’ve always been involved with different types of cancer organizations through the fire department,” said Lieutenant Tom Simpson, who is spearheading the effort, “I decided I’ve seen other departments do this across the country and everybody goes pink for the month of October, so with the permission of the chief a few years ago, we decided to go ahead at do the pink shirts.”
Firefighters are selling the shirts to raise money, and Simpson said they have raised about one thousand dollars so far. They hope to raise about three thousand dollars.
