BOURNE – Buzzards Bay Canalside Park is undergoing a major facelift. But how much more work will go into it will be decided at the May 1st Special Town Meeting.
So far, Phase 1 of the project, which includes the installation of irrigation, an electrical upgrade and a replacement of the current walkway, is fully funded and should be completed before the summer.
Phase 2, however, still lacks funding. That part of the project would include more landscaping, a play area with a splash pad, a pavilion with an outdoor movie screen, and a Memorial Grove with a walkway.
Phase 1 was funded by Community Preservation Act funds at a cost much less than the $1.3 million estimate for Phase 2.
Bourne selectman Stephen Mealy said a separate article at Special Town Meeting will give voters control over how decked out the space should be.
“It’s the Main Street of Bourne, and all of the residents should be proud of what we’re trying to undertake in Buzzards Bay,” he said. “The park is one of the first things you see as you drive into Buzzards Bay.”
Mealy said officials have ensured that passersby will still be able to see the canal through the park.
He said other efforts, such as supporting MBTA train linkage to Buzzards Bay, will revitalize the area.
There was some concern about whether Phase 1 would be completed by tourist season after foul weather prevented steady progress.
