WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — A Hyannis-based airline service that links Block Island, Rhode Island to T.F.

Green Airport has suspended service this summer.

The Providence Journal reports that Rhode Island Airport Corp. officials plan to ask New England Airlines if their Westerly-to-Block Island carrier could take over Cape Air’s service.

Airport chief executive Kelly Fredericks says Cape Air announced last week it was suspending its service because of a pilot shortage. He says the airline would need 195 pilots to serve all of its usual routes but only has 96.

Fredericks says the shortage is partially due to stricter regulations after a regional airliner crashed near Buffalo, New York, in 2009.

Cape Air officials told Fredericks they hope to return to the airport next summer.
