BARNSTABLE – The Cape Cod Commission is expected to formalize their vote today to reject the proposal calling for a Marriott hotel on Main Street in Falmouth.

The vote was 11-7 against the controversial project earlier this month. Turning down a project is rare for the commission. This is only the third time in 10 years that a project has been denied, according to Jonathan Idman, chief regulatory officer of the commission. The others were the Lowes project in Dennis and New Generation Wind in Bourne.

Neighbors and other Falmouth residents had come out strongly against the plan in hearings over several months. Falmouth Selectmen had also sent a letter to the commission that the project did not fit in to the character of the community.

Marriott is considering an appeal of the decision.

Attorney Kevin S. Eriksen, who represents Falmouth Hospitality LLC, a limited liability company run by Robert A. Walker, said the commission’s decision to turn down the project “rises to the level of being arbitrary and capricious.”

“We are extremely upset by the decision. We are weighing all our options,” Eriksen said. “Frankly, we think it’s irresponsible.”
