Cape League Recap: Bourne Sweeps Doubleheader

BOURNE – The Bourne Braves highlighted Thursday night action in the Cape League with a doubleheader sweep of the defending champion Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox

Game 1

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 2

Bourne Braves 6

W: Brian Eichhorn (3-0) L: Josh McMinn (2-1)

Game 2

Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3

Bourne Braves 5

W: Zach Mort (1-1) L: Karl Kauffman (0-1) S: Chad Luensmann (2)

Y-D made the trip to play in a rescheduled doubleheader against a Bourne team on a two game losing streak. Fortunes were about to change for the Braves thanks to solid pitching and advantageous hitting. Game 1 saw a matchup of two undefeated starters in the forms of Bourne’s Brian Eichhorn (Georgia Southern) and Josh McMinn (Oral Roberts). Both pitchers were touched up in the 2nd, but it was Bourne who did the additional damage thanks to a 2 RBI double by Grant Witherspoon (Tulane) and a RBI single by Richie Palacios (Towson). With the score 3-2, after getting two quick outs in the bottom of the 5th, McMinn walked and beaned a batter. Both runners would come around to score on RBI singles from catcher Zac Susi (UCONN) and 1B Lyle Lin (USC). Witherspoon would single in another run to increase his RBI total and the runs in the inning to 3. Buckeye Ryan Feltner entered the game for the Braves and pitched two scoreless to secure the win in game 1.

After about a half hour to regroup and reload, the teams were back on the field for game 2. The stakes raised slightly for the Red Sox as a loss would knock them off the top of the heap in the East. Bourne Braves 1st baseman Spencer Brickhouse (East Carolina) made sure that they would. Brickhouse sat in game 1 of the series and came in firing on all cylinders in game 2, going a perfect 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and was a home run short of the cycle. This is the 2nd time in 4 games Brickhouse left the field without committing an out. Similar to game 1, Bourne did their damage early, scoring 1 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd. Despite giving up a pair of runs in 2 innings of work, Chad Luensmann (Nebraska) was able to reel it in and earn his 2nd save of the season. The win pushes the Braves record to 9-6 on the season, which is good for the best in the league. The Red Sox will get to their shot at revenge as they host the Braves tonight.

Chatham Anglers 4

Brewster Whitecaps 6

W: Christopher Machamer (2-0) L: Eli Nabholz (0-1) S: Joe DeMers (1)

This game had all the makings of a slugfest as Chatham and Brewster traded runs back and forth to begin the game. Whitecap starter, William Tribucher, had trouble locating the plate, issuing 5 walks, which turned into 4 Angler runs in 3.2 innings. The walk bug must have been contagious last night in Brewster. Chatham brought in reliever Eli Nabholz (Millersville) in the bottom of the 6th with runners on 2nd and 3rd, and he proceeded to throw a wild pitch that led to a run, followed by a pair of walks to load bases. Michael Gasper (Bryant) stepped into the batter’s box and tagged a Nabholz offering into the gap, which cleared the bases and gave Brewster a 6-4 advantage. For Gasper, his lone hit on the night, a huge one, raised his RBI total to 16, which is good for 2nd in the league. Christopher Machamer (Kentucky) pitched 3.1 scoreless innings for the Whitecaps to earn his 2nd win on the season out of the pen. To close out the game, Joe DeMers picked up a 2 inning save, his first of the season. After a tough start to the week, Brewster has bounced back to win two in a row heading into the weekend.

Cotuit Kettleers 12

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 6

W: Chase Cohen (2-1) L: MD Johnson (0-2)

The hits came in bunches for the Harbor Hawks and Kettleers last night, both teams combined for 27 hits on the evening. Just for perspective, that’s the same amount of hits the Braves and Red Sox had in their doubleheader. Despite having a higher hit total, Hyannis was unable to push those runners across in large part due to 3 double plays turned on the night by Cotuit. While Hyannis failed to take full advantage, the Kettleers had 7 players register RBIs on Thursday night. Left fielder Brett Kinneman (NC State) had a monster night, just a triple short of the cycle, going 3 for 5 with 4 runs scored, 2 RBIs, and his first home run of the year. Catcher Gian Martellini (BC) drove in 4 runs on 2 hits almost doubling his RBI total on the season. Down 7-1 in the 5th, the Harbor Hawks cut the lead to 2, scoring 4. Micah Coffey smoked a 2 RBI single and would end the night with 4 hits in 5 at-bats. Unfortunately for Hyannis, Cotuit would score 5 runs to their 1 to close out the game. Cotuit hops back into 2nd place at 8-7 and Hyannis drops to 6-8-1.
