The Hyannisport Fire Station is being offered for sale by the Hyannis Fire District to help pay for a new fire station in Hyannis.
HYANNIS – With the Hyannis Fire Station vote just a day away, members of the Greater Hyannis Civic Association are voicing their displeasure.
Members say the Civic Association is not united with the Hyannis Fire District on the fire station vote and has not unanimously agreed with them about the costs.
Deborah Krau, treasurer of the civic association, says they have not had their questions heard from the Hyannis Fire District Board of Commissioners and were not involved in the district’s marketing of support for the fire station vote, despite being named as part of the marketing effort.
Krau says the Civic Association wants the public to know that they think the costs for the new station are too high.
If the vote does not pass on Saturday, Krau said she hopes the fire district keeps the current make-up of the building committee, which includes civic association members, and works on reducing the costs of the station.
In addition to the vote on whether to spend an additional $17.7 million for a new fire station, voters will also decide on whether to allow the district to sell the property housing the former Hyannisport Fire Station as well as a vacant commercially-zoned lot on Phinney’s Lane. The money raised from the sale of the properties would go toward the cost of the new fire station, district officials say.
The fire station vote requires a two-thirds majority to pass. At two district meetings earlier this year, a majority of voters approved the station but not the two-thirds needed for the project to be approved. The last vote on July 1 failed by just eight votes.
If the vote for the fire station does pass, Krau said she hopes that the fire commissioners will meet with the building committee on a regular basis to discuss bringing the station’s cost down.
The Hyannis Fire District Special Meeting is Saturday, October 25 at Barnstable High School. An informational meeting is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. and the vote is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
