Cyr and Whelan Meet With Yarmouth Selectmen

YARMOUTH – Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr and State Representative Tim Whelan met with Yarmouth Selectmen last week.

They discussed legislation that they have passed and are working on, as well as took questions and feedback from selectmen on what the town is looking for help with.

Both legislators are meeting with town officials in their districts in an attempt to communicate what’s happening on Beacon Hill and how they can help their constituents.

Whelan discussed his bill that he co-sponsored, regulating the synthetic opioid carfentanil, work on the state budget, and increasing the budget for Veterans Outreach Centers by $1.2 million.

He said that they are trying to find answers to the funding issues for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District.

“We are trying our very best in just dealing with the realities of what it is in Boston,” said Whelan. “I think we’re doing a pretty good job of trying to find little bits of money and returning them back here to the home district.”

Cyr said that he and his staff filed 27 bills in January, ranging from initiatives that help young people afford homes, giving towns control over spraying of power lines and making sure that Entergy maintains their commitment to state and community once they close the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station.

He also said that it’s important that they continue to engage the public and pointed to a policy summit that he held recently that was attended by around 200 stakeholders.

“We sort of want to make sure that we’re doing a good job bringing people together, convening, getting all the good ideas that we can to address the big challenges the region faces,” said Cyr.
