Falmouth School and YMCA Officials Continue Program Discussions

FALMOUTH – YMCA Cape Cod and Falmouth school officials are continuing to discuss a partnership for before and after school services.

Families have expressed concerns about a switch to YMCA services, including scheduling flexibility and keeping current program staff.

“We have heard all of those thoughts and comments from the community and can adapt programming and services for before and after school programs to meet their needs,” said Stacie Peugh, the CEO of YMCA Cape Cod.

Peugh said the current staff could be retained if they become licensed under the state’s Department of Early Education and Care and the YMCA would assist with the requirements and training for the new curriculum.

Discussions on the possible partnership are ongoing between Falmouth Superintendent Nancy Taylor, Director of Finance and Facilities Patrick Murphy and Peugh. They are expected to continue through July 25.

“We want to make very clear announcements to the community by that July date to ensure parents have the ability to plan for what programs and services will be available in the fall,” Peugh said.

The YMCA often starts in most communities without a facility of their own by providing programs and services.

Programming in West Barnstable ran from 1966 through 1989 without a physical building.

“It was programs and services with partners in the community like school systems who need out of time support for young people to be successful in their growth and development,” Peugh said.

Peugh said that is what they are trying to accomplish after recognizing a need in Falmouth.
