FALMOUTH – Two Falmouth families hosted a lemonade stand yesterday as a fundraiser for Alex’s Lemonade, a nonprofit to benefit efforts to eradicate childhood cancer.

The Cassano and McNeill families hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 25 Ocean Avenue, East Falmouth.

Less than a month ago, their son, grandson, and nephew Max was diagnosed with leukemia. When Max began his treatment, he became known to the family as IronMax. IronMax is fighting an epic battle against his arch nemesis, Sneaky Leu.

After the diagnosis, Max’s family felt helpless. Hosting the Alex’s Lemonade Stand became a tangible way for the family to show support for Max and all kids battling cancer. They will be selling lemonade, baked goods and other special treats at their event.

New this year, 50 families across the country have been selected to represent their states and join Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation in the fight against childhood cancer during Alex’s Lemonade Days, which takes place June 12 to 14.

In addition to the stand in Falmouth, there is one in Marstons Mills this weekend as well. The Hanson family ran a lemonade stand on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Joyce Landscaping on Flint Street in Marstons Mills.

During the Lemonade Days, Hero Family State Representatives, all of whom have been personally impacted by childhood cancer, will share their stories, hold their own lemonade stands, and spread word about the fundraiser and the organization’s mission throughout their communities.

Alex’s Lemonade Days is a three-day national event that grew out of a stand set up by Alex Scott, who died of cancer in 2004 at age 8 years old. During Alex’s Lemonade Days, dedicated volunteers host thousands of Alex’s Lemonade Stands across the country, raising over $1 million for childhood cancer research. June 2015 will mark the 12th Annual Lemonade Days, and will continue Alex’s mission to raise money one cup of lemonade at a time, renewing her idea that any contributor, at any age, can make a difference.
