HYANNIS – The developers of a proposed condominium complex on the Hyannis waterfront are seeking an exemption from the historic districts architectural specifications.

Shoestring Properties LLC attorney John Kenney made a request to the Planning Board last week to waive the need for a certificate of appropriateness from the Main Street Waterfront Historic District Committee to allow for five-story buildings on both sides of School Street.

“I just wish it was that win-win and we all looked at it and said, ‘Ahhhh – I’d love to see that when I came in by boat, but I don’t see that,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, the executive director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District.

Wurfain said she has heard from others that the proposed condo complex just doesn’t have a “Cape Cod or village look.”

The proposed Dockside Residences would consist of nine buildings, on two foundations, and total 33 one-, two- and three-bedroom units.

The buildings would be built on a vacant lot on South Street and where the current Dockside Restaurant is located, which would be demolished.
