HARWICH – Clients of the Family Pantry in Harwich were given locally-caught mackerel by members of the Cape Cod Fisherman’s Alliance on Thursday night.
The effort was part of the ongoing Fish for Families collaboration between the Alliance and the Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
Chatham fisherman John Our helped to distribute the mackerel that he caught on his fishing vessel “Miss Fitz” to pantry clients.
“To be able to see people eat something that we know is so healthy for them and yet you’re doing good in the process, is a real heart warmer,” said Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance Communications Director Nancy Civetta.
There were two coolers of mackerel to hand out to the public at the event.
“The fishermen feel really good about being able to help their neighbors in this way, they are proud of bringing seafood to shore for us to enjoy,” said Civetta.
Since its inception, the project was made possible from the BJ’s Foundation, Cape and Islands United Way, Cape Cod Foundation and Cape Cod Healthcare.
The program is made possible by donations and organizers said that more money is needed to continue.
