Money Raised for Retired Police Dogs

YARMOUTH – Members of the community got together Sunday to support local retired police dogs and the officers that take care of them.

The 14th annual Cape & Islands Police K-9 Relief Fund Reception and Fundraiser auction was held at the Yarmouth House Restaurant, all to raise money to help pay for the medical bills of retired police dogs.

When the dogs complete their service and move into life after day-to-day work with local police departments, the burden of their medical bills falls on their partners and handling officers.

“What this organization does is it pays for all [the dogs] medical bills because when [the dogs] retire the departments don’t pay for the medical bills,” said Joe Ambrosini, the founder of the Cape & Islands Police K-9 Relief Fund and organizer of Sunday’s event.

Ambrosini called the event a success, thanks in part to volunteers and merchants who donated items for auction. It is not yet known how much money was raised.
