Nantucket Jetty Reconstruction Project Finished Ahead of Schedule

NANTUCKET – A $10 million federally-funded project to overhaul the east and west jetties lining Nantucket Harbor began last fall, and was recently completed – 60 days ahead of schedule.

About 70,000 tons of rock was used to shore up gaps and raise the jetties, which will now make navigation easier for boaters heading in and out of Nantucket, and will also have eco benefits as well.

“Getting in and out can be difficult for people that aren’t familiar with it,” said Dave Fronzuto, Nantucket Emergency Preparedness Director.

“I think it’ll be more visible and I think from a water quality point of view, we hope that it helps with the flushing of the harbor.”

The last project involving the jetties was back in 1963, and thanks to favorable weather conditions, Connecticut-based Mohawk Northeast was able to finish the project two months ahead of schedule and on budget.

The jetty overhaul also coincided with an Army Corps of Engineers project this past fall to dredge 40,000 cubic yards of sand from the channel.
