Nantucket Switches Electricity Supplier

NANTUCKET – The newly-established Nantucket PowerChoice program will let the town negotiate an electricity supplier deal on behalf of its residents.

The first 12-month contract was recently enacted, giving residents a cheaper kilowatt per hour cost than they were receiving from National Grid.

The town’s new supplier is Agera Energy, which charges 9.03 cents per kilowatt/hour. That’s about half a cent under the 9.78 cost from National Grid for the current billing season.

Marlena Patton is Vice President at Peregrine Energy, the consulting firm which guided the town through the transition. She said that, while half a cent doesn’t sound like much, it truly adds up over time.

Patton said the PowerChoice program allows residents to opt out at any time, a boon for choice, since the price of power in the future is always uncertain.

“It’s a well-vetted program, the suppliers were chosen through a competitive procurement process, there are no hidden fees, and it’s very open,” she said.

Patton stressed that bills will still say “National Grid” on them, since that company remains power deliverer. But residents should also see Agera on the bills unless they opt out.

The price National Grid submitted to the DCU for the next pricing period also seems higher than the current Agera cost, according to Patton.

Those interested in opting out may fill out a required form at www.masspowerchoice.com/nantucket.

An upgrade which powers homes with completely “green” energy, primarily coming from regional wind project, costs 9.576 cents per kilowatt/hour.
