NRC To Hold Public Meeting Following Inspection of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant

PLYMOUTH – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold a public exit meeting Tuesday to inform the public of recent inspection and assessment of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant.

NRC Spokesman Neil Sheehan said that the organization’s inspection team found around 10 to 15 “deficiencies” which will be expounded upon at the public meeting, to take place at 6 p.m. inside the Plymouth Memorial Hall, 83 Court Street.

“We have not seen anything at this point that would cause us to say that the plant needs to be shut down immediately,” Sheehan said.

Meanwhile, Pilgrim is currently in column 4 of the NRC’s “Action Matrix,” a designation which requires increased scrutiny of the facility.

While the plant is scheduled to shut down in 2019, others are calling for its immediate closure, citing potential harm to surrounding residents in the event of a meltdown.

He said an inspection report will be issued shortly which will formalize the inspection’s results.

That letter will document corrective actions to be implemented by the plant’s owner, Entergy, to demonstrate sustained improvement and to provide a basis for the plant to exit Column 4.

Sheehan said the NRC would not even consider moving the plant out of that designation until “significant” action was taken to improve its operations.
