PLYMOUTH – A newly formed panel will meet for the first time on Wednesday night to discuss the decommissioning of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth.

The 21 member group, which includes representatives from several state agencies, businesses and residents, was established by state energy legislation.

Barnstable Town Councilor John Flores, former Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf and Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kevin O’Reilly are members of the panel.

Three representatives of Pilgrim will also sit on the panel.

“The primary issue is to be sure that we guarantee that the decommissioning of the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant is done in the safest and most transparent way possible,” said Flores.

The plant’s owner and operator, Entergy Corp., will outline the current operations at Pilgrim and the decommissioning tasks once the reactor shuts down by June of 2019.

The committee’s charge is to advise the governor and legislators and to provide information to citizens.

“We have to keep the pressure on Entergy in a cooperative manner because I think they will want to decommission it with safety as the major priority,” said Flores.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. at Plymouth South High School.
