EAST WAREHAM – Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Matthew Beaton was in East Wareham on Thursday to announce grant awards from the new Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) program.

The MVP program continues the Baker-Polito Administration’s efforts to work with communities to prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Beaton announced the names of 71 communities that are going to be entering into the program.

By entering into the plan, they qualify for a number of grants and funding.

Wareham is receiving about $26,000 by entering into the program.

“It’s been a lot of work going into this and a long time coming, and it is a significant step to have communities in the first go at this really step up and partner with us,” said Beaton.

The state will have over 250 certified trainers to help the communities develop an understanding of vulnerabilities for climate change.

According to Beaton, that will influence future decisions on municipal and state level and future grant programs.

“As our climate changes and we start feeling the effects, whether it’s sea-level rise or rising riverbanks or intense storms, whatever it may be, it allows for the communities to have a better understanding of what those vulnerabilities might be and develop a climate action plan for that municipality,” said Beaton.
