Yarmouth Opens New Playground Named After Long-Time Resident

ThinkstockPhotos-147561636YARMOUTH – A long-time resident of Yarmouth who passed away in 2008 from cancer will be honored with his name on the town’s new playground.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the new Fred Thacher playground, which is located at the corner of Route 6A and Old Church Street in Yarmouthport.

Yarmouth Parks and Recreation Director Pat Armstrong says that the land formerly belonged to Fred’s family.

“That property was donated by the Thacher family back in the 1800s and it had always been used as a common,” said Armstrong.

The $125,000 playground will be complete with new equipment, landscaping and fencing.

Armstrong says that it was important to dedicate the park to Fred.

“Fred was a great athlete, coach and teacher, and so we’re going to dedicate this new playground in Fred’s memory,” said Armstrong.
